For most IT departments, the risks are not in SharePoint’s scalability or SharePoint’s physical architecture. The risks are in the logical architecture as it relates to security, the functionality as it relates to application features and design / presentation. If these risks are not managed carefully, your end users will not adopt to SharePoint and you will be lucky if you get a second chance to deploy it.
